چکیده

Invasive exotic plants are aggressively competing with native plant species in Florida. In some situations, infested habitats will no longer support native wildlife, and endangered plants and animals are being pushed closer to extinction. Managers of these natural areas are finding herbicide treatments to be the most effective and economical way to control exotic plants with minimal risk to native species. This article describes the methods and equipment used to treat invading plants and presents general guidelines on herbicide selection. ANAGEMENT OF INVASIVE EXOTIC PLANTS WITH HERBICIDES IN FLORIDA

The Potential for Herbicide Resistance in Non-Native Plants in Florida’s Natural Areas

1 Corresponding author: [email protected]; 352-392-9981 ABSTRACT: There are several alternative herbicides with different modes of action for control of invasive plants in natural areas. Of the four classes of herbicides commonly used on invasive plants in natural areas of Florida, the acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitors, imazapyr, imazapic, and metsulfuron methyl, are the most likely...

Effects of herbicides on Behr's metalmark butterfly, a surrogate species for the endangered butterfly, Lange's metalmark.

Lange's metalmark butterfly, Apodemia mormo langei Comstock, is in danger of extinction due to loss of habitat caused by invasive exotic plants which are eliminating its food, naked stem buckwheat. Herbicides are being used to remove invasive weeds from the dunes; however, little is known about the potential effects of herbicides on butterflies. To address this concern we evaluated potential to...

Rethinking Exotic Plants: Using Citizen Observations in a Restoration Proposal for Kings Bay, Florida

The Kings Bay, Crystal River complex, located in Citrus County, Florida, is one of the world’s largest spring-fed ecosystems and a critical warm-water refuge for endangered Florida manatees. Unfortunately, large areas of Kings Bay are currently in a state of ecological degradation characterized by smothering mats of the filamentous cyanobacterium Lyngbya wollei. The causes of this ecosystem shi...

Housing is positively associated with invasive exotic plant species richness in New England, USA.

Understanding the factors related to invasive exotic species distributions at broad spatial scales has important theoretical and management implications, because biological invasions are detrimental to many ecosystem functions and processes. Housing development facilitates invasions by disturbing land cover, introducing nonnative landscaping plants, and facilitating dispersal of propagules alon...
